A clean, minimal PDF reader for when you don't want to download a viewer, install a plugin, or sign in to a cloud service. Drop a PDF, search it, zoom it, navigate by thumbnails, print it — all in your browser, with the file never leaving your device.
When you need a no-install PDF reader
- Working on a borrowed machine. No Acrobat, no Preview, no permission to install anything.
- Reading on a kiosk or shared device. Where you don't want your PDF cached in some viewer's recent-files list.
- Quick sanity check. A PDF arrived as an email attachment — open it in a clean reader before downloading.
- Printing from any machine. Drop the PDF, hit print, walk away.
- Reading on Linux without a heavy viewer. Browser-native is faster than launching Evince/Okular.
How to use the reader (step by step)
- Open PDF Reader.
- Drop a PDF onto the page or click to browse.
- Navigate with the page controls, sidebar thumbnails, or keyboard (PageDown/PageUp).
- Search with Ctrl/Cmd-F or the built-in search bar.
- Zoom with the +/− controls or Ctrl/Cmd-scroll.
- Print or download anytime from the toolbar.
What the reader supports
- Full-text search — searches the embedded text layer of the PDF. Scanned PDFs without an OCR layer aren't searchable (use PDF OCR when it ships).
- Page thumbnails — sidebar with miniature previews for fast navigation.
- Zoom and fit-to-width — pick a fixed zoom or auto-fit.
- Keyboard shortcuts — PageDown/PageUp, Home/End, arrow keys for fine scrolling.
- Print — directly from the viewer using the browser's print dialog.
- Outline navigation — bookmarks/table of contents shown in the sidebar when the PDF has them.
Reading password-protected PDFs
Encrypted PDFs prompt for the password. Without it, the content can't be displayed — that's just how PDF encryption works. SwissArmyPDF doesn't try to crack passwords; you need the correct one. If you own the document and just want to remove the password for future reading, use Unlock PDF (coming soon).

The browser's built-in PDF viewer is usually fine for most casual reading. SwissArmyPDF's reader is for when you want a clean view with no browser session ties — handy on shared machines.
Troubleshooting
- Search doesn't find words I can see. The PDF probably has no text layer (it's an image-only scan). Use PDF OCR first.
- Pages render slowly. Large pages (high-DPI scans) take longer. Zoom out for an overview, then zoom in on individual pages.
- Fonts look wrong. Some PDFs reference fonts that aren't embedded; the browser substitutes them. Open in Acrobat if exact rendering matters.
- Print output looks off. Use the browser's print dialog options (scale, margins, page size) — the issue is usually a margin or scale mismatch.
Why local reading matters
Opening a PDF in a cloud viewer means that document is now on someone else's server, possibly indexed for ads or analytics. SwissArmyPDF's reader runs entirely in your browser using PDF.js (the same engine Firefox uses). The file is never uploaded; nothing about it is logged. Open DevTools, Network tab, and verify yourself.
